Week 7 -Maus 1 T/ Maus 2

These are some of the first graphic narrative book that i have read. The story keeps you so interested. I had a hard time putting it down. I wanted to know what happened next the plot was so jaw dropping and the art was so interesting they way people were portrayed as animals. Art Spiegelman really knew what he was doing and shows people what the Holocaust was like from a different perspective. It is nice that you see how much he  cares about his father but has a had time showing it cause his father is so stubborn. Art Spiegelman, wanting to record his father's Vladek Spiegelman history as a graphic novel, conducts a series of interviews with him over several years. Vladek tells how German policy towards Jews slowly changed in the late 1930s, and how his family came to suffer, persecution, and loss of life. Talks about Vladek and how he tried to make the most out of the difficult situations he faced. Once i had finished the first i could wait to read the second.

weeks 6 underground comics

These underground comics of the  seventies really talk about sex and drugs. some of them can be quite racy and end up showing more than you think your going to see. Didn't really find anything to offensive to the point of were i couldn't go on. I wonder what people of the seventies really thought about these comics?

Week 5 Blanket

This story speaks to anyone out there and makes you feel a real connection with Craig. It is about a young boy who has to grow in a religious house hold and is taught to do what is right. He falls in love and when it is over and she leaves he is so devastated this is something most of us can really relate to. This graphic novel was so good and i didnt think that it would touch on so many subjects that we deal with every day in our own lives.

Week 4 Plastic Man

Really enjoyed this comic. It is a classic comics, someone falls in some acid and instead of killing him. It gives them super powers. This one throws a twist on it, he is a crook but after getting some help by some monks decides to only use his powers for good. It was extremely easy to read and I found myself amused with Woozy's character. It was interesting that Plastic Man and him were friends. He was always getting into trouble and somehow helping Plastic Man in the process. When i first started reading i didnt think i was going to enjoy this comic since it was so old and very simple drawn. It didnt bother me cause the story held it together so well

week 3 Peanuts comics and Nemo

Peanuts comics are so classic i have read these ever since i was little. I love the dry sense of humor and quick little wittiness of these comics. I also enjoy the absence of adult and how the comics are so minimalistic.  I thought Little Nemo in Slumberland was  rather simple. The style of the comic was very simple and the bold black lines that are somewhat sharp and relatively stylized. The colors are almost like a wash of watercolors or gouache paint. The color themselves are pastel and overall suits the feeling of the comic. One of the reason why I enjoyed this comic so much, was because I felt Winsor McCay really successfully portrayed the little boy's dream.

week 2 understanding comics

I feel Scott McCloud offers a good basic knowledge of the mechanics of comics, vocabulary, and visuals to help keep the reader moving through each panel. While I think he did a good job there i do believe that some pages were to busy and that you loose information, or information is not retained as well when there is so much going on.

The Arrival

The Arrival was one of the most interesting sequential book I have seen. It is nice to see a comic that can get the story across without saying a word. The detail with in the imagery is astounding. You can tell that some is made up within his mind, but other images you can see were ether taken from a photo or drawn from life. It was easy to tell what the story was about, a man has to leave to go on a ship across the sea to a new and strang world. This man has to start a new life and find a way to survive. It is a story of emotion and turmoil this strang land is so different and it really shows people, how it is so hard when you move some were new that you have never been.
